ZINES

Cancer Zine by Hall Hassi

"Photocopy toner is carcinogenic, meaning if you get it on your fingers or in your lungs you're more likely to get cancer. I found this shitty old copier that sucks at binding toner - it just comes off the page really easily - and I printed a bunch of pages all black and stapled them. It's beautiful, though, to see all the marks of use, to see time recorded that way, on the paper and on your fingers."

Shitbeams on the Loose #2

I feel like shit is 'in the air' these days, or at least its place in comics dialogue. Images from second grade of dissecting owl pellets - that sort of dense, overlapping information - return to me when reading certain creators, and when reading this anthology.

I had one moment of very strong resonance in this anthology, in the transition from Ron Rege Jr's beautiful, rugged pages, into Jason Overby's first two panels.

Later on, Grant Reynolds charts his progress in music-via-comics exploration. These pages feel like the letters sent home by an energetic explorer who is pushing forward rather than building a stable home.
