Concluding with Scandinavian Comics Appreciation Month, I bring you Aapo Rapi, native Finlander and member of the art studio KutiKuti in Helsinki. Rapi’s work could almost be described as the “epitome” of comics, with fat, cartoony characters, bright colors, and direct, universally appealing stories, you can almost read them without translation and receive the same amount of enjoyment.
Being one of my favorite underrated cartoonists, you can imagine my pleasure at seeing him have a page in Kramers Ergot 7. On that same note, you can imagine my displeasure when no one really seemed to notice. Sadly, I don’t think I’ve ever heard his name uttered stateside beyond the KE7 table of contents, which is an incredible shame considering the vast amount of gorgeous work he’s already completed.
His varietous nature of storytelling bears mentioning; from his book, “Meti”, which features autobiographical work about his relationship with his grandmother, to his most recent book, “Naaburger”, which is all jokes about eating meat pies, one can never be quite sure what he’s going to cook up next.

Tirelessly drawn and often hand-colored, his style reminds me of psychedelic children’s films like “The Point”, vivid and character-driven. However, there’s definitely a dark undertone to a lot of his work, the stories are oftentimes laden with the introsepective desperation of adults, or the uncontrollable terror of being a powerlessly small child in the company of frighteningly mad grown-ups. Shit can get really real, beautiful and heart-breaking.

Works not mentioned:
“Kuningas Toffee”
“Pullapoika”
“Kelomökkien mies”

is this really the end of Scandinavian Comics Appreciation Month? Will it resume again next year?
you still haven't covered that guy you love that draws with markers. he did that whole thing with the burgers. and apparently is married to amanda vahamaki.
Who can say? This could just be the first S.C.A.M. out of the year...and yes, I realize what that spells, but this shit is for realsies.
That's Roope Eronen! Right now, he's drawing this thing about a dog who is really talented at pooping.

yeah i love what i saw of the dog pooping thing.
so good!
I love the Scandinavian cartoonists! In a lot of ways they remind me of us North Americans. There are many similarities between us, in style and subject.

Thanks for this. I hadn't heard of this cartoonist. The work looks really great. Are there any translations available?
..Besides KE7, I mean.
A lot of his work is printed in Finnish, but feature English translations running along the bottom, like subtitles (take care to read which ones do and don't):

Those kutikuti tabloid anthologies are really cool.
aapo is some kind of priest of the good. i don't every-day see books that give me the thrills i dug up from the flats as a scarred and battered youth. his books do just that. believe it and weep, scattered poppies. where can you even get this meal? i bought it in california, of all places. oh my goodness gracious me. a place such as that. a blooming place name of that name. a blossoming continent.
